Welcome to Words of Direction, the TFL-approved fanlisting for the first book in the Bartimaeus trilogy, 'The Amulet of Samarkand' by Jonathan Stroud. The title, 'Words of Direction', is referenced in chapter 12 of 'The Amulet of Samarkand'. If you're interested in knowing these words of power, and you don't have the book handy, just draw up a pentacle and direct your attention to the bottom of each section. The words and their English translations are found there. This site uses horizontal navigation, meaning you scroll sideways instead of vertically.

For more information about this fantastic book, as well as links to the official website for the series and Jonathan Stroud's homepage, see the about section. If you're interested in joining, visit the rules section. Here you'll find an overview of the rules, most of which are pretty painless, though we can't promise you'll be immune to the Red Hot Stipples if you break one of them. Next you'll reach the join section, which contains the form needed for joining. Simply fill out your information and a pack of imps will rush off toward my inbox, your information in tow. If it takes more than a week for your name to be added, please contact me. The imps need punishing. Following that, you can visit the members section and see more fans of the book.

About

First of all, what is a fanlisting?
According to TheFanlistings.org, "a fanlisting is simply an online listing of fans of a subject, such as a TV show, actor, or musician, that is created by an individual and open for fans from around the world to join. There are no costs, and the only requirements to join a fanlisting are your name and country. Fanlistings do not have to be large sites (although some are) - they are just a place where you can have your name listed along with other fans of the same subject. TheFanlistings.org is the original (but not only) web directory for fanlistings, dedicated to uniting fans across the globe."

So, what is 'The Amulet of Samarkand'?
The back cover of the American version: "Nathaniel is eleven years old and a magician's apprentice, learning the traditional arts of magic. All is well until he has a life-changing encounter with Simon Lovelace, a magician of unrivaled ruthlessness and ambition. When Lovelace brutally humilates Nathaniel in public, Nathaniel decides to speed up his education, teaching himself spells ways beyond his years.

With revenge on his mind, he masters one of the toughest spells of all and summons Bartimaeus, a five-thousand-year-old djinni, to assist him. But summoning Bartimaeus and controlling him are two different things entirely, and when Nathaniel sends the djinni out to steal Lovelace's greatest treasure, he finds himself caught up in a whirlwind of magical espionage, murder, and rebellion.

For lovers of: Harry Potter, the Artemis Fowl series, the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy. Any mid-level fantasy, really, though I would recommend this to readers of just about any age. It isn't simple by any means, but it is extremely accessible. If you haven't read it, I suggest you do.

Rules

1. You must be a fan of 'The Amulet of Samarkand'. If you aren't, then I have no idea why you would be joining. Please read the book first!

2. You must use your real name, not something like 'Mandrake3211'. Never fear, we are not djinni, we will not misuse your birthname.

3. If you list a website, we'd appreciate a link back. This can be a text link, or you may choose one of our lovely banners, which can be found to your right a bit.

4. Please don't link back to a site that includes hateful, harmful, offensive, or illegal content. If such a site is listed on your application, you will be added to the list. Your site, however, will not be listed. You may then email me with another URL, if you wish, but I will repeat: no hateful, harmful, offensive, or illegal content will be tolerated.
